I was recently skimming through a newspaper that my Grandpa saved from June 14, 1977, when I came across some stimulating ads…for vintage vibrators! I was a little shocked to see ads for “massagers” right next to all of the other ads from Sommers Family Drugstore, but I guess they were suppossedly back massagers, and actually vibrators were pretty much out of the closet by the 70s…
Check this one out:
This one is actually featured in Babeland’s Museum of Vintage vibrators, you can take a look here. While you’re on the site, check out their history of vibrators and the other cool vintage vibrators in the galleries. You can also actually purchase vintage vibes on Ebay if you so desire.
Here’s another:
And something tells me this wasn’t just for relaxation either…
I also found a “massage parlor” ad in the Personals section, ironically just below an ad for a spiritual advisor:
These ads are for Father’s Day presents, complete with everything Dad needs: a new electric shaver, a lunchbox for work, a vibrator for pleasing the lady, and cigars for afterwards!
Oh and of course beer and Sex Appeal cologne:
I’m so glad I decided to read through the ad section of the paper, it was more interesting than the articles for me!
After seeing these ads I was thinking that it would be super awesome to have a vintage vibrator, but actually I have a Hitachi Magic Wand. Although it was brand new when I got it new, Hitachis have been around since the ’70s, so I still have a retro style vibe!
