Ever since I saw Molly’s beautiful Challenging Sexy image, I’ve wanted to try a menstrual photo. And when I saw the “women” prompt this month, I actually hoped my period would come early, so I could take some bloody shots…and it did!

I used to despise my period. The cramps, the bloating, the sore breasts, the pms (ok, it’s still pretty annoying and painful)…but I don’t think it’s gross anymore. ย And now that I’ve started using a menstrual cup instead of tampons, I mind it less. I also don’t mind sex on my period…in fact, masturbating is key to keeping me sane when my hormones are raging.

I understand blood in general squicks some people out and that’s understandable, so if this photo doesn’t appeal to you, I get it. Butย I actually think menstrual blood can be sexy.ย And I think bloody dildos look straight up BAD ASS.

What it means to be a woman has changed drastically over time for me.

It used to mean always smelling good and always shaving my pussy and wearing push up bras under cute outfits (and there’s nothing wrong with any of those things.) Now though, I am in love with my natural vaginal smell and even my body odor and my bush, and bras tend to annoy me. I still like getting dressed up and wearing makeup and shaving my legs and doing some stereotypical “fem” things, but I don’t do them because I feel I have to to be a woman or to be sexy. I reject the idea that women have to have certain qualities, and especially the idea that they have to be neat and tidy and “lady-like.”

To me, being a woman meansย being an authentic person. And sometimes that means getting sweaty and wet and messy and loud…and bloody. And to me, that’s sexy.

Menstrual was featured as a top photo in the Sinful Sunday Round-up; thanks Molly!

I love the subtle blood staining your hand, I love the lighting, and I love that you had the courage to post this. I’m really glad you did. Now I know your blood is just as beautiful as you are ๐Ÿ™‚

Thanks Emma! And thanks for looking at the photo before I posted it for me! You helped me work up the courage to post it. ๐Ÿ˜€

This is fantastic! I love my Diva Cup and that it collects my blood for me (to play with in the shower later), but I also really like wanking during my period. That’s a brilliant post, and photo.

    xx Dee

Penny, what an amazing post; I love both your words and the photograph. Is this a challenging image? Yes. But that’s the reason it appeals to me. You’re shining a light on something that is normal and natural and I applaud you for it. Sexy, bold, stunning. Jane xxx

Such a great image! As we commented on Molly’s post, few things are more feminine than menstruation. Bold choice of image, but one that beautifully illustrates the theme. And of course any shot of you that features your RHCP tattoo is a winner in my book.

PS: That IS a super bush. ๐Ÿ™‚

Every female of reproductive age can overcome ,easily ,the sidefects discomfort etc of period. You have just to talk to ur doctor!
    Very good photo.

Or alternatively just embrace them as what your body needs to do right now… Yes they are annoying but they are also a sign that your body is doing its job.

It’s not exactly that easy…medications/birth control/things that help discomfort have their own disadvantages and side effects.

Very powerful image. I wrote a huge comment on mollys blog so I won’t repeat it again but lets just say you and molly have changed a way i think that needed to be changed I thank you for that.

Thanks Holly–I read your comment on Molly’s post, and I agree, most of us are taught from a young age that periods are yucky and dirty and something to be hidden. Thanks for your input!

Wow, so utterly feminine. This truly screams ‘woman’, you’ve excelled the prompt! I wish i had the balls of steel you clearly have!

    Go girl.

Good for you. Loved your comment:

To me, being a woman means being an authentic person. And sometimes that means getting sweaty and wet and messy and loudโ€ฆand bloody. And to me, thatโ€™s sexy.

My 28 yr marriage finally came to a close and it was sad to say goodbye; but, with all the ups and downs we NEVER slowed down in the sex department due to blood. As a guy I’m with you in this. And I love this quote I stole: “Life is sexually transmitted.” And, as the Jews reminded us for thousands of years: “The life is in the blood.”

Thanks for commenting Dan! I wasn’t sure if I would get many comments from the male perspective, so I really appreciate it! ๐Ÿ™‚

I want to cheer about this post. There is so much I love about it. I have found myself enjoying bras less and less too but sadly at my age they are still required but I do tend to wear them less and am slightly braver about that than I used to me.

I like my pussy shaved, but not for any other reasons than I just like the way it feels to me, it is purely a personal choice but I think yours looks beautiful, so beautiful in fact that it almost tempts me to grow mine.

I think your picture is absolutely beautiful, I love the red tint to your fingers, it feels so strong and seems to show off just how connected you are with your body which is a beautiful thing…. and the last paragraph you wrote…Magic!

Thanks so much Molly! As I’ve mentioned, you paved the way for me in this–I don’t think I would have had the guts to post it if it weren’t for your brave and beautiful menstrual photos. So thank you!

And I still do like to shave my pussy and mix it up from time to time, but I used to shave always because I thought hair was shameful and weird…and I’m glad that I don’t feel that way anymore. It’s definitely a personal choice, and I think all styles can be sexy. ๐Ÿ™‚

I love this picture. So many cultures have prohibitions about women’s bodies and sex during menstruation. And yet I think if I had to choose a time during the month when I’m horniest, this would be it.

It’s transgressive, it’s messy, it reminds us of what we are made of – blood and guts and a coating of skin.

“Itโ€™s transgressive, itโ€™s messy, it reminds us of what we are made of โ€“ blood and guts and a coating of skin.”< I love that! Thank you! xxPenny

It is a part of what we are and every woman should accept it, sadly I think, social pressure makes it a taboo subject which in my opinion it shouldn’t be. As I said in Molly’s post I have never had an issue with my periods and it is such a shame that so many women do as it is a part of our feminitity and our power!

    Great post and image!

    ~Mia~ xx

    1. Penny Post Author

Thanks Mia! That’s awesome that you’ve never had an issue with yours! I hope there will come a day when it isn’t seen as so taboo and shameful…

  12. Cammies on the Floor

I love sex during my cycle. But I don’t know that I would be as brave as you post this. I think just because so many people I know wouldn’t appreciate it; which is why you are such a remarkable blogger.
It is natural and normal, and even in this photo, sexy.
But you are a brilliant photographer.

  13. John

Wow! I always love your photos; you tell a story so well with pixels!

(Slight blogging envy, at this point!)

You are a fabulous, wonderful photographer.

Oh, and that is a great photograph. So real, and honest! ๐Ÿ˜‰

  14. Mariasibylla

Penny, this is fantastic! Brave, bold, honest. I too, love your last paragraph. The composition is blowing me away. I love the focus just on your fingers yet you can see your lovely body laid out in the background. I also like how you don’t quite show your breasts, keeping the focus on your fingers and where they’ve been.

  15. Epiphora

It’s funny… when I see this photo, it seems so mundane to me. That color of blood on your fingers. It’s so familiar. Yet it is so brave to post it, as you and I both know. Thank you for having the courage, and for mentioning my dildo picture!

  16. sub-Bee

I’m so glad you were brave enough to post this image, it really is beautiful. As I said on Molly’s post I hated my periods and how Ill they made me but thank you for showing us it is possible.

  17. Heaven

Wow, you go Penny I am glad you jumped on board to show your natural feminine beauty with this pic of your menstrual. I do know a lot of people are squeamish with blood but it does not bother me in the least all women go thru this. When I first saw Molly’s post I was too in aww that she did it. We should not have to hide our true selves.

  18. Jim

Great Photo Penny!! My wife and I have sex while she is on her period and she does enjoy it as much as I do! Or maybe I enjoy it as much as she does!! In the past before my wife, I had a somewhat hard time enticing ladies that sex at that time was ok with me as long as was ok with them. Some took more encouraging than others, but when that wall was torn down all enjoyed the experience. Nobody seemed to mind a shower after…
